When our videojournalist exam video went viral

A video about a taboo topic: the menstruation of homeless women

In 2017 I attended to a 4-month long videojournalist course, organised by the Moholy-Nagy University of Arts And Design and Index.hu, the biggest independent online news portal. We studied the technics and ethics of journalism, camera using, film editing. Our team of three (a journalist and a social media manager) chose a rather taboo topic for the exam: the menstruation of homeless women.

We collected interviews with homeless women, social workers and NGO professionals about the topics – for a contrast we impented interviews with random passerbys. The whole video was created by the three of us, from the interviews to the postproduction.

Not only our video was awarded as the best of the class at the exam, but it went viral and reached 143 000 views on Youtube without any support.

For me personally, this is one of the most important works of the last few years, as we could reach many people with a truly important social topic – and with a work that was created newly gained skills.

(The video itself unfortunatelly is without English subtitles)
